The Starfish Story……….

An old man was walking on the beach one morning after a storm.  In the distance, he could see someone moving like a dancer, dancing with so much flair, agility and sprightliness in her steps.  In total amazement he kept looking at the dancer.  As he came closer, he saw that it was a young woman picking up few of the starfish that had come with huge waves on the shore and very gently with a mother’s tender touch again throwing them into the ocean where they actually belonged.

He wondered to himself: “Has that woman gone mad.  What is she doing and why?  He approached her and kindly asked her: “Young lady, why are you throwing these starfish back into the ocean?” She looked up at the old man and ever so sweetly said: “Sir, the sun is up, and very soon the tide is going out, and if I do not throw them into the sea where they rightly belong, they will die.  They are not meant to be on the shore and I don’t want to see them die at any cost.  They too have a life.” 

The old man was a little surprised by her reply as he was not understanding what she was up to.  He again thought to himself: “Has this woman gone mad and why is she doing this”.  So he once again approached her: “But young lady, do you not realize that there are many miles of expanse of beach and thousands of starfish? They must be all coming up on the shore and dying by thousands. How many will you keep on saving and why? You cannot possibly make a difference to them.” 

The young woman listened politely, to the old man, then bent down picked up another starfish and gently threw it into the sea.  She said:  “Even by giving life to only one starfish from amongst thousands of them present on the beach, it makes a difference for that one”.  So saying, she then went on her way with a sparkling smile on her face and a dance in her steps.  Life for her was purely making a difference to whoever she came across. Let us all learn to make a difference in someone’s life.
