A son took his old father to a very elegant and expensive restaurant for an evening dinner. He ordered for the best of foods that his father always liked. When the food came on the table, his father who was very old and weak, like a young innocent child emptied most of the things in his plate and started eating excitedly and whilst eating, dropped food on his shirt and trousers and he became dirty all over.
His son did not shout at his father nor did he say, ‘Look dad what have you done, you have embarrassed me in front of so many diners.’ Instead he was thoroughly enjoying all this and kept on wiping his father’s mouth with a napkin. He was feeling so contented and pleased seeing his father enjoying himself. Other diners watched him in disgust while his son was calm. After he finished eating, his son, quietly took him to the washroom, wiped the food particles, removed the stains, combed his hair and fitted his spectacles firmly.
When they came out, the entire restaurant was watching them in dead silence, not able to grasp how someone could embarrass themselves publicly like that. The son settled the bill and started walking out with his father. At that time, an old man amongst the diners called out to the son and asked him, ‘Don’t you think you have left something behind?” The son replied, ‘No Sir, I have not.’ The old man retorted, ‘Yes you have! You have a lesson for every son and hope for every father.’
The restaurant went silent and nobody talked. They all kept staring at what had just happened. To care for those who once cared for us is one of the highest honors. We all know, how our parents cared for us for every little thing. The amount of fusses and angers were all tolerated by them and we were always given the best no matter what. Love them, respect them, care for them because they have brought you to this unique world. It is our duty to take care of them and the elders in our family when they grow old and need us. We are their only support. There is no one for them except you to make them cheerful and happy in their last days. That is the greatest thing that will bring joy and fulfillment to us.
A poignant tale! It reinforces the strong message of caring for our elders very well. Thanks for sharing Kamal!

So true. Good example for today’s children who forget that parents were the ones who cared for them when they were small. A child and old people needs to be dealt same. But children forget that one day they too will be in same shoes. At same time you are teaching your children manners and on contrary disrespecting your parents. Forgetting that children pick and learn lots of things from what they see.

Thanks so much for this beautiful and so true words and yes today’s children need to understand who their parents are and how much pain they took to bring them up and when their time comes they need to take care of them and not abandon as usually seen in times of today. Yes and the son was so good he knew how to take of his father and it was so nice that he never felt bad too.

on other side of coin have seen many parents have involved themselves in so called materialistic world that they have forgotten to give their children values. To make them free from botheration just fulfill their demand even if it’s wrong.

Yes absolutely agree it can happen in the reverse too and have not inculcated the value of looking after the elders and sometimes being rude in front of the kids too. Yes for sure it happens

I wish more people realized this truth and cared more towards their loved ones rather than others opinions! Great post as I am a firm believer in showing our elders more respect and our families and even strangers for love, compassion and kindness and we’d all be so much better for it!

Thanks for the beautiful comment Houston and absolutely true and I too support your views and they too r vulnerable in their old age if we will not take care of them then who will why leave them at someone’s mercy. These stories are waking up calls for us.

You are so right! I guess you really struck a nerve with me as I get so upset to see so many of our elderly neglected or just not appreciated and it breaks my heart so I was thrilled you brought it up.

You have pointed out what is often missing in today’s very busy life. We need to implement this practically so that our children imbibe them too, more for them to understand and value elders than for our selfish motives!
