An Inspiring Breakfast Meal……..

“I am a mother of three children and have recently completed my college degree. The last class I had to take was Sociology.  The teacher was absolutely inspiring with the qualities that I wish every human being had been graced with. Her last project of the term was called “Smile”. The class was asked to go out and smile at three people and document their reactions.

Basically, I am a very friendly person and always smile at everyone and say hello anyways, so, I thought this would be a piece of cake for me, literally.  Soon after we were assigned the project, my husband, youngest son, and I went out to McDonald’s for a breakfast meal. It was just our way of sharing special playtime with our daughter.  We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when all of a sudden everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did.

I did not move an inch, an overwhelming feeling of panic welled up inside of me as I turned to see why they had moved.  As I turned around, I smelled a horrible ‘dirty body’ smell, and there standing behind me were two poor homeless men.  As I looked down at the short gentleman, close to me, he was ‘smiling so sweetly’. His beautiful sky-blue eyes were full of God’s Light as he searched for acceptance.

He said, “Good day” as he counted the few coins he had been clutching. The second man fumbled with his hands as he stood behind his friend.  I realized the second man was mentally challenged and the blue-eyed gentleman was his salvation. I held my tears as I stood there with them.  The young lady at the counter asked him what they wanted. He said, “Coffee is all Miss” because that was all they could afford. (If they wanted to sit in the restaurant and warm up, they had to buy something. He just wanted to be warm).

Then I really felt it, the compulsion was so great I almost reached out and embraced the little man with the blue eyes. That is when I noticed all eyes in the restaurant were set on me, judging my every action. I smiled and asked the young lady behind the counter to give me two more breakfast meals on a separate tray. I then walked around the corner to the table that the men had chosen as a resting spot. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue-eyed gentleman’s cold hand.  He looked up at me, with tears in his eyes, and said, “Thank You.” I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, “I did not do this for you. God is here working through me to give you hope.”

I started to cry as I walked away to join my husband and daughter. When I sat down my husband smiled at me and said, “That is why God gave you to me, Honey, to give me hope.” We held hands for a moment and at that time, we knew that only because of the Grace that we had given were we able to give. That showed me the pure Light of God’s sweet Love.

I returned to college, on the last evening of class, with this story in hand. I turned in ‘my project’ and instructor read it. Then she looked up at me and said, “Can I share this?” I slowly nodded as she got the attention of the class. She began to read and that is when I knew that we as human beings and being part of God share this need to heal people and to be healed.  In my own way I had touched the people at McDonald’s, my husband, daughter, instructor and every soul that shared the classroom the last night I spent as a college student.

I graduated with one of the biggest lessons I would ever learn: UNCONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE. LOVE PEOPLE AND USE THINGS – NOT LOVE THINGS AND USE PEOPLE.

GOD WROTE: Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart. To handle yourself, use your head. To handle others, use your heart. God gives every bird it’s food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Keep this going.

  1. Oh, that is so beautiful – God’s love in action! I’m so glad God blessed you and those homeless men … as well as some who were observing.
All the best for your college studies and thanks for posting your lovely photograph.

  2. And this is how we should be everyday, in every situation. I certainly need to be better about it too. Be more aware, less absorbed in the “me” of it all 🙂 This is a wonderful reminder and a blessing to read Kamal 🙂 LORD, thank You for continuing to bless Kamal

  3. I sit here crying as I read it and you know what they rightly say that a man who’s loved not is the poorest. My heart’s longed since a child to be loved the way I am, accept me for who I am with my flaws but hey maybe God just teaches you to love this way.. ❤ Stay safe dear

    1. Thank you dear Tanvir. To see a smile on a poor soul is so good for our soul too and what she did by giving them a proper meal was an act of love and kindness. I do that many a times and it is so nice to see happy smiles on their faces. It lifts you up.

  5. Thank you for this, Kamal. This COVID-19 is making me feel like a bad person. I usually give food to beggars on the street, but at the moment I just can’t approach them with this virus risk and knowing we have Michael, who has been very sick and is autoimmune and my mom who is 82, to look after. I said to Terence today that this is making me feel totally helpless, as if I now can’t do anything at all for others. It is the worst part for me.

    1. Yes I can completely understand what you must be going through Robbie. Here in Mumbai too they have removed almost everyone from the streets and I too cannot see anyone who I too can go and give food too. Yes you must right now focus on your family too and it sure is worst because it is so nice to be helping a poor soul and to see a smile on their faces too. Thanks so much for your valuable words, Robbie. Stay safe and pray for everyone’s well being and be happy and positive everything will pass.

  7. Hi Kamal,

I am so happy I found your blog today. This story brought tears to my eyes. I am inspired by your courage to overcome outward appearances to see beyond.

This reminds me of a time my husband and I were vacationing in Georgia. We had a bunch of unopened water and sodas. I knew bringing them to the airport would mean throwing them out. I prayed what to do with them. We pulled into a gas station, there on the corner was a woman, who was homeless. We offered her our drinks, she happily accepted. It was going to be another 90 plus degree day. I felt so happy I followed God’s guidance as I am sure you did in your story above.

    Many Blessings to you! Lisa

    1. Thank you Lisa for your valuable feedback and yes at times when we want to give away things that we do not want right on time we will have a needy person ready to take it and to see pleasure and smiles on their faces is so awesome. I have come across many such people I will not give them money but will take them to a eatery and give them food to eat that is the way we can fill their stomachs too. God is always there guiding us with kindness and love.

Most times its easier to be nice to people we know. But true kindness and love are shown to the people we don’t know.
