How Our Egos Sometimes Misjudges a Person………..

Based on a True Story:

A lady in a faded grey dress and her husband, dressed in a home-spun suit walked in timidly without an appointment into the Harvard University President’s outer office.  The secretary could tell in a moment that such backwoods, country hicks had no business at Harvard and probably did not even deserve to be in Harvard.  ‘We want to see the President’ the man said softly.  ‘He’ll be busy all day’ the secretary snapped. ‘We’ll wait’ the lady replied politely.

For hours the secretary ignored them, hoping that the couple would finally become discouraged and go away. They did not and the secretary grew frustrated and finally decided to disturb the President. ‘Maybe if you see them for a few minutes, they’ll leave’ she said to him.  The President, stern faced and with dignity, strutted towards the couple. The lady told him, ‘We had a son who attended Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. He was happy here. But about a years ago, he was accidentally killed. My husband and I would like to erect a memorial to him, somewhere on the campus’

The President wasn’t touched. In fact, he was shocked. ‘Madam’ he said gruffly, ‘we can’t put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died. If we did, this place would look like a cemetery.’ ‘Oh, no,’ the lady explained quickly. ‘We don’t want to erect a statue. We thought we would like to give a building to your Harvard in his fond memory.’ The President rolled his eyes. He glanced at the gingham dress and homespun suit and then explained, ‘A building!!!! Do you have any earthly idea how much a building costs? We have over seven and half million dollars in the physical buildings here at Harvard.’

For a moment the lady was silent. The President was pleased. Maybe he could get rid of them now.  The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, ‘Is that all its costs to start a university? Why don’t we just start our own?’ He husband nodded. The President’s face wilted in confusion and bewilderment.  Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford got up and walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they established the University that bears their name, Stanford University, a memorial to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

Most of the time we judge people by their outer appearance, which can be misleading. And in this impression, we tend to treat people badly by thinking they can do nothing for us. Thus we tend to lose our potential good friends, employees or customers forever.

Remember: In our life, we seldom get people with whom we want to share and grow our thought process. But because of our heavy headed EGOs’ we miss them forever.

Life is really very simple and beautiful. What we Give Out, We Get Back. The Gateway to Wisdom & Knowledge are always Open………

      1. So true, appearances are, if not always, often deceptive. Even though our eyes tend to filter out one’s personality out of their appearances, we could always open our heart to the real person beneath the colours of the skin. 🙂
        .
Thanks for sharing this story, Di! Have a great day!

  1. Beautifully penned and heart warming message, boundlessblessings,
unfortunately this seems to be the kind of society that we are living in today,
or perhaps I had never noticed this before.
I loved that happy ending. Thank you for warming my heart.

    1. Yes dear Tanvir and I totally agree with your words. Egoistic world and we judge people from their appearances. No matter how the person is we need to see him as a Human instead of begrading him. Good one way look what an awesome University. Thank you so much dear for your valuable inputs.

    1. Yes absolutely true and agree totally with your words, Amira and such a great story on how our ego gets inflated and so good that they could build a great university in their sons name. Thanks dear Amira so much

  2. Thank you Kamal for this beautiful and wise story. First, I love learning how Stanford University came to be. It is both amusing and deep.
The big Ego looking down on the simply dressed couple who then clearly tell
themselves their solution to build a memory for their son. Tell it clearly in the President’s presence.
A momentous lesson for him and for us all.

  3. Wow! This story is amazing, Kamal, and conveys such an important lesson for us all! Indeed, arrogance and condescending attitudes end up costing people far more than they gain in the end. No wonder the kingdom of heaven is said to belong to the humble and lowly in spirit. Thank you for this, dear Kamal!

      1. I actually went in search of more information about Leland Stanford and wife. Leland Stanford was a railroad magnate, one time Governor of California and Senator. Again thanks for sharing the story.

      2. That is right. The lesson is what matters. I also feel that the university President who put up poor behavior in the story and the entire university would not want the story to be believed as authentic and so might be the source of the thoughts that discredit it.

  4. Your story was an excellent reminder…about life. I once had a boss that said …everyone no matter how they look …treat them with respect. They will all pay with the same money…and we want them to return over and over again. and it’s true..if someone in a store or restaurant I feel has disrespected me or my friends..I always vow to put my money somewhere else.

  5. Tremendous post, though I read a lot. But still, I was unaware of this incident.
Initially, I was so disheartened to know how emotionless people are here.
But then It’s life, we can’t expect everyone to be good.
The words of wisdom you have shared will forever imprint in my mind. Looking forward to read more everyday!
More more love to you! ❤
