Perseverance can make miracles happen…………..

perseverance

An eight-old-child heard her parents talking about her little brother.  All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money left for his surgery.  They were also moving to a smaller house because they could not afford to stay in the present house after paying the doctor’s bills.  Only a very costly surgery could save him now and there was no one to loan them the money.  When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother with whispered desperation, ‘Only a miracle can save him now,’ the little girl quickly went to her bedroom and pulled her piggy bank from its hiding place in the closet.  She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully.

Clutching the precious piggy bank tightly, she slipped out the back door and made her way six blocks to the local drugstore.  She took a quarter from her piggy bank and placed it on the glass counter. ‘And what do you want?’ asked the pharmacist.  ‘It is for my little brother,’ the girl answered back. ‘He is really very, very sick and I want to buy a miracle.’  ‘I beg your pardon?’ said the pharmacist a little surprised.  ‘His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?’ ‘We do not sell miracles here, child. I am sorry,’ the pharmacist said, smiling sadly at the little girl. ‘Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it is not enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.’

In the shop was a well-dressed customer.  He stooped down and asked the little girl, ‘What kind of a miracle does your brother need?’ ‘I do not know,’ she replied with her eyes welling up. ‘He is really sick and mommy says he needs an operation. But my daddy cannot pay for it, so I have brought my savings.’ ‘How much do you have?’ asked the man. ‘One dollar and eleven cents; but I can try and get some more,’ she answered barely audibly. ‘Well, what a coincidence,’ smiled the man, ‘A dollar and eleven cents, the exact price of a miracle for little brothers.’  He took her money in one hand and held her hand with the other.  He said, ‘Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let us see if I have the kind of miracle you need’.

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton, a neurosurgeon.  The operation was completed without charge and it was not long before Andrew was home again and doing well.  ‘That surgery,’ her mom whispered, ‘was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost.’ The little girl smiled.  She knew exactly how much the miracle cost, one dollar and eleven cents plus the faith of a little child.

Perseverance can make miracles happen. Miracle can come in various forms, as a doctor, as a lawyer, as a teacher, as a police, as a friend, as a stranger and many others.  A river cuts the rock not because of its power, but because of its consistency.  Never lose your hope and keep walking towards your vision.   The small girl could achieve what she wanted only by not giving up and had faith in herself that no matter what she would see that her brother was on the way to recovery.  Keep going and never give up.

  1. Innocence, faith and belief which we all have as a child is lost somewhere when we start behaving pragmatically as a adult. A child believes in miracle has faith to imagine it happening.
Lovely post Kamal, great one, will surely stay with me for a long time.

  2. Thank you for this wonderful story of perseverance and love. The little girl was prepared to give all her savings to buy a miracle for her brother. And she found it.
I also love the comparison to the river cutting the rock – through perseverance.

  3. Kamal, thank you from my heart for sharing this story. Actually the little girl presents all of us, in her faith of strong believe that there is a solution out there, once you believe it. She was not afraid or driven by any negative thoughts of giving up.

  4. The fact that the man was at that drugstore at that time, overheard the little girl, and was moved to help WAS a miracle.

BUT, nothing would have happened without the *action* of the little girl with the faith that she could somehow make a difference for her brother.

Wonderful post, Kamal. Thank you so much.

  5. boundlessblessing, this is such a beautiful story about perseverance. Although, i think such skill is all with us, but as human beings, we are too quick to give up, when things do not work out, we automatically just move on to another path. It is inspiring to read this short little story as i am also still in the process of getting back my perseverance. There isn’t much choice but to keep moving and pursuing the goal that one had initially set out. Falling down is hard, but getting back hard and maintaining the perseverance, is definitely what sets your determination. Thank you for sharing such a lovely message. Keep up the good work. It would be great if you could by at my post :). Its always lovely to see another online blogger’s work as it is inspiring that a well written message is publicly accessible for those who struggled to pick themselves up after multiple failures. Keep up the good work. 🙂

    1. No not at all. I am not influenced by anything but I receive these beautiful stories that are so inspiring and so nice to be practicing in our lives. I hope it does not hurt you but my religion is Humanity I do not belong to any religion and God is in all of us. Thanks for your great comments.

      1. You’re very welcome. I asked this because I am familiar with the tone of parables from the Bible, as I was raised in a Christian household. Over the years I’ve felt similar to your statement about religion being Humanity. Just now I was thinking how reaffirming it was for one to write in a way like a parable and not necessarily believe in the precepts of the religion.

      2. Thanks so much for your kind words and yes we sure are brought up each and everyone to believe in our faith but from my limited understanding God when he comes down as an Avatar or a Prophet his only message is Love and there is nothing but Love, these religions have taught us only to get scared and to put us in boxes and that our religion is the best and the others are not good and that is the reason we have these religious wars from ages and ages. Today our minds have developed we need to realize that we are all One there is no one but He who plays every role be it whatever Man or Woman. This is all a big illusion and an imagination. As he says We have never come and we have never gone only bodies and bodies.
